I have a theory about what may happen in a couple of the upcoming episodes based on spoilers that have been floating around. It's just a theory, but since it's based on the spoilers DO NOT CLICK IF YOU'RE AVOIDING THEM! TURN BACK NOW!

So during a run up to the season finale, we're evidently supposed to get quite a bit of TIVA (I think I threw up a little even typing the smooshing) stuff going on. The spoilers have been purposefully vague as to how far it goes, but there is a mention of a triangle with Tony, Ziva and Michael (the guy from Israel). It also says that there's a bunch of angst and that there will be tragedy involved.

Another spoiler indicates that there will be an undercover Mossad agent posing as an arms dealer.

So here's my theory...Michael and Ziva were involved in Israel. She may even be in love with him, but decided to move on since she's been in the U.S. Tony and Ziva get close and either have sex or come close to it. Michael shows up in the picture during the case. Tony ends up shooting him, either by accident or because something goes wrong. This then completely destroys the chances of Tony and Ziva moving on happily ever after as a couple. It also creates tension moving into the next season.

An off-shoot of my theory that is a little more in the 'wishful thinking' category on my part at the moment is that Tony decides to leave the team because of this.

TPTB for the show are completely with enamored with cliff-hangers and love creating that type of drama that carries from one season to the next. I think Tony leaving the team (only temporarily though) is something that they might consider playing with. It would fall in line with some of the threads we've seen happening since Season 4 really.
So? What do ya'll think?

This is the trouble with the Godawful Abatross of UST. It *never* ends well. It leads characters down paths that have nothing do with what the rest of the show is about *or* with the characters themselves. The characters end up serving two masters and that always ends in tears... generally from the fans.

Yup. You and me both agree on this. Sigh. I like the format of the show as it is - they solve a mystery and in so doing have angst and merry banter. Sometimes one of them gets hurt or too personally involved and the others react, usually sympathetically. I don't need any romance thrown into that mix. I don't need to see their personal lives beyond glimpses of Gibbs's boat and Tim's typewriter and nice little flashes of back story. I don't want any of them to sleep with each other except in my own head. I want lots of subtext between all the characters - not just one specific pairing.

Having rewatched the show several times now, what bothers me is the perception that there's somehow UST between Ziva and Tony. Honestly, I can't see it between them in any greater degree than between the other characters. They all have a certain amount of chemistry with each other but the Tony/Ziva stuff is actually one of the relationships with the least chemistry - along with Tim/Ducky which also doesn't sparkle much *g*.

See? That's the thing I don't get. There's far more evidence that Tony and Ziva would NEVER be anything beyond teammates... even outright friendship is pushing it than there is evidence that they would. There are people I've worked with for more than a decade that I like well enough, and eagerly go to lunch with them when we're both going. We talk, we joke, we have fun, but it would never occur to me to want to do anything with them outside of work. I certainly wouldn't want to sleep with any of them. Once I retire, I doubt I'll ever give them more than a passing thought... and they'll likely do the same.

Fifteen years down the road, I wouldn't expect to see Tony and Ziva visting each other on their vacations. I *could* see (looking through the gen goggles now) Tony and Gibbs keeping in touch. Even Tony and McGee. (I figure Abby could end up on anyone's doorstep at any given moment. ;-) But Tony and Ziva? If their paths were to cross, I could see them having a drink or a meal and catching up on things, but once that was over, there'd be a fond hug and good bye and that would be that until the next time they ran into each other at a conference or whatever.

It's the old show vs. tell problem. What we've *seen*, and heard, from the characters tells us they have no romantic chemistry. TPTB keep trying to *tell* us, mostly with the OOC mooning from Ziva, that there's Something There, but since it's in direct conflict with what we've *seen*, it doesn't stick and even starts to erode Ziva's character. GGGGRRR!!!!

I'm going to have to start just pasting the link to my UST essay whenever this topic comes up. :-)

Well you know I'm with you on the UST essay. I just wish TPTB would read it.

And I agree with all you've said here - ESP the "show vs tell" problem which is the real issue. No matter how many times they want to tell us there's something there, it just doesn't arise organically from the show so I remain unconvinced. And also kind of pissed off with them for manipulating me, and for making Ziva look like a bit of an idiot.

And this is it, in a nutshell.

Farscape is my poster child for How To Do Ship Right (and I don't mean Moya ;-). John and Aeryn's relationship grew organically over the years and it *worked*. They fought and argued and trusted and distrusted and watched each other's backs and sided against the other and before they knew it their lives were so intertwined it was hard to tell where one stopped and the other started. They were inevitable.

And they weren't born out of duct taped UST. They were born out of the *story* in a way mainstream shows seem to fear as if being true to the story will somehow brand them as Not Really Hollywood or Not Serious About The Business.

Maybe one of these days TPTB will wake up and realize the fans who pay their salaries don't give a rat's ass about The Business, we just want our storytellers to tell us a good tale of an evening around our high tech fires.
