So I just got back from my local Barnes and Noble and while there I purchased "House of M" (a Marvel comics storyline from a few years back). I figured it'd be a good place to start coming out of the 40 year DVD thingy that I'm getting and it's a good way to step in without going hog wild (which is absolutely going to happen at some point).

The Barnes and Noble that I go to has a Starbucks on the 3rd floor near where they sell the graphic novels. They have an excellent selection of graphic novels, btw. So I take the book to the Starbucks counter so that I can buy some coffee too.

Register Guy: (looking at the book) That's good, but not as good as "Civil War". You should really read that.
Me: A friend just sucked me back in to reading comics again, so I'm trying to get caught up.
Hot Manager Guy "Francis": You should really read "Avengers: Disassembled" to get into that one. Then you can go straight into "New Avengers" which is completely awesome.
Me: *slight glare* Don't worry, I'll be back. *plots ways to kill [livejournal.com profile] crimsonquills kindly*
Register Guy: Oh yeah, and you should do "New Avengers: Illuminati" which will take you into "Civil War".
Me: Umm...thanks. I'm sure you'll be seeing a lot of me.

I feel your pain. I've been doing the same thing slowly over the last couple of years with Marvel and it's kind of daunting how much there is.

On the other hand both guys are right. "Civil War" is assume. So is "Avenger: Disassembled" and "Illuminati". Oh and I'd add "Ultimate Avengers" for the AU factor alone. *bg*

Btw, avoid [livejournal.com profile] nebt_het cause she'll pimp you DC if she gets the chance. ;-) Personally I only pimp Green Arrow, but she does the whole Bat family and tha's almost as scary as trying to catch up on the X-men comics.

You know you're not helping...right?

Looks like I'm going to go into Hollywood tomorrow to the local comic book store.

I know. *scuffs foot in dirt* But I felt the need to share the pain.

I miss having a decent comic store in town.

Oh, oh, oh, House of M? AKA "Yet Another Reset Button"? Meh, not my favorite. I mean, yay for another alternate universe, I suppose, but it's the aftermath of it that really gave me the mehs. Plus, it ruined all the interesting work Nunzio and DiFillipis had been doing on the (new) New Mutants title (which by then had morphed into New X-Men).

However, it DOES have Professor Doug in it, which is mightily cool. But did they use this to bring him back for good? Noooooooo...

Civil War actually made me grind my teeth. Darkness for the sake of darkness, most of it, but everyone's mileage varies.
