I'm totally going to ramble my way through the episode and then go back and do more coherent thoughts after a second or twelfth viewing.
Best opening EVER. A blowfish driving a sports car. Owen looking pretty hot while shooting at it. Ianto out in the field with the team. And Jack showing up just in time to make a spectacular entrance.
I love that the team is pissed at Jack for leaving them and that it wasn't just glossed over. They've obviously grown into much more of a team while he was gone, so he's an outsider again. Only this time it's not because he wants it that way.
OMG! Woobie!Ianto. Jack tells the team that he found his Doctor and Ianto asks "Are you going back to him?" The look on his face when he asks it is just...*sniff*
But then Jack looks straight at him and says "I came back for you." *loooooooooooooooooooooong pause* "All of you."
jesshelga dubbed Torchwood, Fanfiction: The Series. She's not entirely wrong, but this is fic when it's done right. (Or maybe I'm just hormonal.)
Oh looky! Spike's here. Umm...yeah. He's like a mixture of Spike and a darker, more twisted Jack. I can't say I'm hating that.
PC Andy! So love him. Hope he's back lots more.
LMAO! The dialog in this episode is AWESOME. "Help me Obi Wan Kenobi, you're my only hope!"
I love that Ianto is the only one with the wherewithall to go find a taxi to chase Jack when he leaves. Such a pragmatist.
*we pause this review while
webbgirl rewatches the 'Snog and fight' scene a few dozen times*
And we're back. The cab scene with the team is just great. There's a rhythm to the show so far that was missing last season. It's got that quirky humor thing that Doctor Who has and there's more of a flow. We can only hope it sticks around all season.
Oooo...Jealous!Ianto.
Jack andnot SpikeJohn arguing about who the wife was in the relationship. *hee*
Awww...poor Tosh.
Wow. John Barrowman and James Marsters weren't kidding when they talked about the chemistry between these two. Yowza.
Okay, one quibble. WTF with the Gwen/Jack scene? I just...no. It's almost like the writers are trying to keep their options open with them or something.
Aaaaaaannd Gwen's still an idiot.
*hee* Jack wants to photocopy his butt. That's so him.
I love Ianto's reaction to Jack asking him out. The whole conversation was actually kind of great. Jack's slightly nervous and on unfamiliar footing with trying to have a normal relationship. He got rid of his normal swagger and Ianto is still clearly pissed at Jack for leaving but says "Yes" to the date. This could potentially lead to huge levels of AWESOME this season.
John calls Ianto 'eyecandy'. Even if he's evil, the man is smart.
OW! Damn! That time dying *had* to hurt. Not even Jack's body is supposed to bend that way.
Umm...I think Ianto just pondered Captain John's suggestion of an orgy for about a second.
And we have stopwatch!
Smart resolution. Didn't feel quite as contrived as a lot of them last season.
Oooo...and we end with the ominous message. And now we have a thousand fanfics trying to guess at who 'Grey' is.
EEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!! The previews for the rest of the season are pretty damn exciting too. And it's a little sad, but I may be the most excited about the shot of Ianto in the black 'not a suit' outfit. PHWOAR!!!

PC Andy! So love him. Hope he's back lots more.
I've heard he'll appear in a few episodes, and at least one episode will feature him, but I'm not sure.
I love that Ianto is the only one with the wherewithall to go find a taxi to chase Jack when he leaves. Such a pragmatist.
I loved that when I saw it in the preview clip. Ianto is definitely a pragmatist, and his original job at Torchwood was to clean up their messes, so it seemed very logical for him to automatically think of this while everyone else was still whining about Jack leaving them again.
I thought that was sort of referenced during the blowfish showdown too. Everyone has their role: Owen's the doctor, Gwen's the caring one, Tosh deals with the tech, and Ianto... what exactly is his role now? He's out in the field, but does he have a specialty? He seems to be good with tech, but not as good as Tosh. Is his specialty just being organized and being able to think outside of the box because he doesn't have a specialty?
If Jack hadn't shown up, would Ianto have taken the shot? Is he going to be a (pardon the pun) Jack of All Trades and/or a Jack-in-training?
Okay, one quibble. WTF with the Gwen/Jack scene? I just...no. It's almost like the writers are trying to keep their options open with them or something.
I couldn't decide if they were trying to keep the door open or slam the door shut. There was a moment where I thought they were going for a jealous!Jack, but I couldn't tell if it was jealousy over Gwen getting married because it took Gwen "off the market" or he was jealous of her finding someone while he's been alone so long.
*hee* Jack wants to photocopy his butt. That's so him.
I don't think it was just his butt. ;) I almost died when Ianto made the comment about some fetishes should remain secret.
He got rid of his normal swagger and Ianto is still clearly pissed at Jack for leaving but says "Yes" to the date. This could potentially lead to huge levels of AWESOME this season.
I'm really interested in seeing how this works out, because we've never seen Jack involved with anyone long-term in the romantic sense. It's all been fun and games before. Even when he was in love with someone, he didn't stay for long. Part of that in the last hundred years or so was because he couldn't, what with the "not aging" thing, but Ianto knows about that, so there's no out there.
Ianto also knows Jack is a great big flirt and has a massive amount of history and the baggage that goes with it, but I'm pretty sure Ianto will not be willing to share when it comes down to it.
John calls Ianto 'eyecandy'. Even if he's evil, the man is smart.
Not blind either. ;)
OW! Damn! That time dying *had* to hurt. Not even Jack's body is supposed to bend that way.
I always imagined Jack was rather flexible, but ow, ow, ow, not that way.

Two seconds. ;)

And Ianto's rather gleeful use of it. I thought Ianto was going to sprain his eyes with all the eyerolling he did over John's antics, but I thought it was cute.
Smart resolution. Didn't feel quite as contrived as a lot of them last season.
One thing I'd been worried about after seeing the preview bit where John handcuffed himself to Gwen and saying the cuffs were unbreakable was there was an easy out there -- John's arm is breakable. They did cover this, by saying cutting off his arm would trigger the device, but didn't say why. Maybe they said it "could" trigger the device, but weren't sure. Either way, they put spackle over the plot hole that probably would have been left open last season, so I was happy.
Oooo...and we end with the ominous message. And now we have a thousand fanfics trying to guess at who 'Grey' is.
I have a feeling we already know who it is, and even if I'm wrong about that, I think I know how we'll find out.
EEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!! The previews for the rest of the season are pretty damn exciting too. And it's a little sad, but I may be the most excited about the shot of Ianto in the black 'not a suit' outfit. PHWOAR!!!
We're definitely off to a good start. There's still a dark thread, but there's a lot more humor and it seems the internal logic is working a bit better. I'll have to review the episode again, just to make sure. ;)
The preview does look very interesting. I'm curious to see if the "aliens are among us" invasion thing will be a recurring theme that will build up through the season. It would be a good one to do.
And I share your assessment of Ianto, but I'm pretty sure you already knew that. ;)
