I think [livejournal.com profile] rainfletcher might be the only one on my flist who will be interested in this, but I'm so very excited by this story in the Hollywood Reporter!

Elves Gather at Warners

For years and years there has been talk of an ElfQuest movie but it never came to fruition. It'll be interesting to see if this one actually makes it through the process. I'm also curious as to whether it'll be live action or animation. There are pluses and minuses to both. For those of you on my flist who read comic books, I HIGHLY recommend ElfQuest. Especially the original Quest. They're not easy to get your hands on these days, but the color versions are best. If you don't mind reading them online, the official site has been uploading the issues over the past year in celebration of the 30th anniversary.

I've been meaning to make some EQ icons for awhile and this just reminds me I haven't done that yet. I'll use Nightcrawler since Petalwing from EQ made a guest appearance in my favorite Uncanny X-Men.

Elfquest! Yes! I think, in the end, I adored those first 20 issues more even that I adored Uncanny X-Men. I had a huge crush on Strongbow and Redlance.

I'd prefer animated, but it would terrify me that it wouldn't reflect Wendy Pini's style.

HEEEE I was the same way with Strongbow and Skywise.

I couldn't even begin to count the number of times I've read those issues.

I have the same fears/concerns about it being animated. Her art is such a huge part of the story itself.

I found Elfquest at issue 16 of the original black and white run, when it came out quarterly, and then spent the next 3 months annoying every comic and specialty shop in Australia by phone for all the back issues. It was an amazingly frantic and wonderful 3 months.

And the fact that Cutter had got skewered by a troll's pike in issue 16 had absolutely nothing to do with me falling in love with the series, of course. *veg*

I need Elfquest icons too... hmmmm...

My brother got me hooked on them. I think at the time they'd published up to issue 10. I remember at the time thinking that three months was a LIFETIME to wait for the next issue.

I should be in bed right now (I have to be up in 6 hours) but I'm looking for good scans to use for icons. *g*

I was a confirmed Marvel girl at the time, having already gone on a mighty quest to find back issues of the X-Men after I'd come in during the Kitty Pryde issues... so this huge, b/w comic with its stylised artwork just blew my mind!

I think I can safely blame Wendy Pini for me branching out into anime. *g*

Let me know how the quest for scans goes!

Ditto on the Marvel thing for me. Especially the X-Men. They helped me kill a good chunk of a summer at my grandmother's with absolutely nothing to do.

If there are specific scenes or characters you'd like, let me know.

ElfQuest was my gateway drug into comics. First ElfQuest, then the X-books, and all downhill from there.

Since it appears that I will in no way be able to make it to the convention, I would appreciate any ElfQuest-related news you might happen to stumble across in your travels.

If you saw my post on this very topic, then yeah, you know that I'm taking this quite seriously. I do hope they get it done this time. The news from Wendy herself that Dodgeball-guy grew up reading the series and was a big fan went some distance toward calming my nerves about it.

Now, I do have to ask: do/did you read EQ from a slasher's perspective? See, even a casual glance at recent fandom reveals that it's approximately 80 percent speculation about whether Cutter and Skywise ever had sex with one another. With all due respect to slashers and yaoi afficionados, I don't remember that being the all-important question of the storyline.

I'm scared that if I look much closer, I'm going to find this story that I love reduced to shipping wars and cutesy pairing names. ("Oh yeah? Cutfall all the way! Redlance sucks!")

I got into ElfQuest and the X-books about the same time (within a couple of months of each other) so they were totally my gateway drug.

I'm trying not to get my hopes up too high about the movie, but I am excited about the possibilities.

I knew nothing of slash or the concept back when I was reading the books. I just knew that I thought Strongbow and Skywise were both cute *g*. I have seen the net arguments regarding Cutter and Skywise and I know that Richard Pini has stated that yes they have, but I agree with you that it's not really important in the course of the stories.

I've made minor attempts to look for fic and other fannish stuff, but I always end up scared that the batshit quotient might be somewhat high. Plus the majority of the fics that I've seen have taken place post-Original Quest. While I do enjoy some of the later titles, some just plain sucked.

I know that ElfQuest was probably my first media exposure to alternate sexuality and lifestyles. It's a good thing that my mom never wanted to preview the books before we read them. Otherwise once #17 came out, I never would have gotten any further.

I will definitely post any news that I find out during CC. I'm planning on specifically looking for EQ stuff while I'm there so I'll take lots of pics when appropriate and share the info.
