So I've been browsing the web looking at various hotels etc in Bristol for my stay. I've been checking the write-ups on Trip Advisor to get an idea of what folks think.

I came across this one and have been laughing for the past 5 minutes straight. I'm pretty sure I'll be skipping this hotel, but I'd love to meet the reviewer. This is copied directly from the website. I changed nothing.

Dramatis personae:
BristolPavs - a business traveller who spends many thousands of pounds per year on hotels.
Receptionist - an alumnus of the Victor Meldrew Hospitality Academy
Various builders and labourers
Breakfast staff

Act I, Scene I: 10pm after a hard day I check in and am given the card to my 3rd floor double room. As soon as I open the door the unmistakeable stench of stale tobacco greets me. Almost immediately after that, the bitter February cold hits, as the maid has left the window wide open to try and air the room. Oh, and in a commendable carbon footprint-reducing enterprise, the radiator is off and cannot be switched on!
Act I, Scene II: A walk around the 3rd floor reveals that rooms on the other side have small signs on them saying "this is a no smoking bedroom" whereas mine does not. A trip back down to the receptionist to ask for a different room

Act II, Scene I: Me: "terribly sorry, but you seem to have given me a smoking room. Please can I change rooms"
Receptionist (scowling): "no we haven't".
Me: "er, it smells of stale smoke, the window is open and there's no 'non-smoking room' sign on the door, as there is on rooms on the other side of the floor"
R: "I can assure you it's a non-smoking room - all our smoking rooms are on the 2nd floor"
Me: "Right, well, in that case a lot of naughty people have stayed in that room and smoked. And I've forgotten my wooly hat to keep me warm as the cleaner has obviously left the window open to air out the smoke. So PLEASE can you change my room"
R: "but all our smoking rooms are on the second floor"
Me: Ah yes, you did say. Still, it smells like a warm mug of tobacco-chewer's spit. So I shall ask you once more. Please give me an alternative room. Please. Thank you. Please.
R (now in a huff goes to keycard machine and gives me room 406): "There you go. Hopefully that one isn't a smoking room. Good. Night."
Me: "your munificence and sagacity are a credit to the Thistle group. Goodnight"

Act III, Scene I: Room 406
A VERY small single room. The television is on a very low stand at the bottom of the bed. To see the full screen one needs to sit up or spread one's legs and peer between them (the latter option reveals at best two thirds of the screen). But now to sleep.....
Act III, Scene II: They're renovating the whole floor so at 8am the next morning the builders start ripping out the carpet in the room next door and engaging in general crashing, tearing, shouting and hammering.

Act III, Scene III: a very nice breakfast served by delightful, polite staff go some way to making up for the previous shenanigans.

Conclusion? Try other Bristol hotels before settling for this one. If you must come here, ask for a room with a "no smoking room" sign on it and avoid room 406. and have a nice breakfast!

LOL I love reviewers like this. Very dry, very English.

I have to admit, although you're more than welcome to stay with us, we can't exactly offer luxurious accomodations and if you can afford to stay in a hotel, you'd probably be better off! It gives you more privacy and freedom too.

I can try and check a few places out for you, if you'd like? The chains are probably the best bet though. I'll ask around.

The Ramada is nice, that I know, and it's close to the centre of town.

Let me know exactly when you'll be in Bristol so I can book a day or two off :o)

I tend to be a hotel stayer no matter what. I'm having to step down my normal hotel snobbishness a bit to find places that won't completely break my piggy bank for the trip. *g*

I'm looking at getting in the afternoon of May 25th and staying for that week. I was having trouble finding availability at places on Saturday night, so I figured I'd just stay an extra day in London to make it easier.

I've been looking at the Ramada and the Holiday Inn Express near Temple Meads. They both look decent. Someone had recommended the Premier Inns as being cheap but okay. I keep reading a bunch of reviews that say they're really noisy though.

I'll probably make a final decision by next weekend and then book it. If you have any recommendations for good places or places to absolutely avoid, please let me know.

Thanks! Less than 8 weeks to go!
