Trying to feel a bit less...RAARR...
Oct. 17th, 2011 03:53 pmSo because of several factors recently I've been thinking a lot about the portrayal of women in the media and the influence. There's still a lot of this that I fail at personally and many things that I find I don't articulate well. However, I'm finding more and more that this is a passion of mine. I think it's one of those things where you buy a certain kind of car and then you notice that type of car where ever you go. Once you really notice it, you can't unnotice it.
This Thursday in the US on OWN (Oprah's network) there's a documentary called "Miss Representation". It's a look at how the media portray females and how that media influences the younger generations.
It goes up against the idea of "It's just a commercial" or "Just a TV show" or "Just a comic book" that gets trotted out whenever issues are voiced over female (and even male) stereotype portrayal.
My roommate is going to a screening tonight (I had plans and am going to Disneyland tomorrow). I'm very curious to see the full movie. I'm also hoping that it will become more widely available for viewing soon.
On a very related note: I'm sure many of you have seen the new Dr Pepper 10 ads. You know, the ones that "Aren't for women"? The guy that stars in them is one of my neighbors. I swear I can't even look at him on the street now without shaking my head or asking what the hell he was thinking.
