So I still have a cold. I'm willing it to get better. I just went over to the Farmer's Market to get my Starbucks fix and got some Jambalaya. I figure the spices should help clear some stuff out of my sinuses and lungs. Please keep the illness in mind if this rambles.
I had to disappoint a lovely group of tourists while I was there. I'm wearing a polo shirt I bought in Wales that has the Welsh dragon and says Cyrmru above it. They were sure that I was from Wales and wanted to know where. I explained that I'd bought it while there and vacation and they wanted to know what I thought of every place I went in Cardiff and Bristol (one of the gentlemen, who incidentally made a pass at me, was from Bristol). I felt bad because they were so excited about running into another Welsh person. They were impressed they I understood their accents. I told them lots of BBC viewing. :)
Speaking of older gentlemen hitting on me...when my friend and I went to the Paley Center for the Fall Preview screening on Friday, I ended up sitting next to a gentleman named Kevin. He was a distinguished looking older gentleman in a seersucker suit and a straw hat. He started chatting me up when Linda had gone out to the restroom. He was more than a bit irritated when she came back and I started talking to her. I don't get it...I looked like crap from having a cold and sounded just as bad. Seriously though, any guys out there under sixty willing to chat??
My review for the first episode of NCIS:LA will be going up on Dear NCIS in the next couple of days, so I'll put a link here when it's up. I will say that the slash potential on the show is HUGE. And not just from the 'any two pretty guys', well 'any five pretty guys' in this case, perspective. There's a definite chemistry there with Sam and G. I may even have a plot bunny or five. Anyway, I thought I'd share my thoughts on the other shows though. These will be spoiler-y since none of these episodes has aired yet, so please don't click on the cut if you want to remain spoiler free for the first episode of any of the shows. However, I won't be detailing the plot points for the most part because I like for folks to be able to watch for themselves. If there are specific things you'd like to know about, let me know.
~~~Medium
I've never watched Medium on a regular basis. It's one of those shows where if it was on I'd leave it on, but I never searched it out. The cast, writers and producer for the show were there for a panel prior to the screening. The girl who plays the middle daughter is hysterical. She's so going to be a stand-up when she gets older.
The episode itself was good. There were definite comedic moments and heart-string moments. I do like that the show comes across as a family drama where the mother just 'happens' to have this ability rather than having more of a supernatural vibe.
They picked up from where the show left off on NBC and I don't think I'm giving anything away if I say that Allison comes out of the coma. The episode is about how things have changed for her post-coma and about how Joe deals with it as well. There are some significant changes for her and I think the episode does a good job of handling them.
It's still not a show that I think I would purposefully seek out, but it is a decent watch. From what the actors and writers said during the panel, it sounds like CBS is giving them the room to move the show in the direction they would like which they weren't able to do with NBC.
~~~~ The Good Wife
As many of you know I'm a huge Chris Noth fan. His presence on the show was enough to make me want to give it a peek. I was a bit worried about how the premise would work as a series though. Essentially it's the story of the wife (Julianna Marguiles) of a fallen politician (Chris Noth). Chris Noth's character is the State's attorney and he gets caught up in a sex and money scandal and goes to prison. It's really about how her character works to move past that and to provide for her family.
She has a law degree but hasn't practiced in years. She goes to work at a firm for an old friend from law school (Josh Charles, who I still think of as being 18 years old). Since she's a young associate she gets the grunt work. She's also competing against a much younger and much more ambitious lawyer in the office. There's also the obligatory dragon-lady of the office who takes her under her wing. Christine Baranski is perfect in that role.
While there are definitely some predictable turns in the episode, it's still done so well that you don't really mind. Even one of the courtroom scenes reminded me of the perm revelation from "Legally Blonde". I really liked JM in this and wasn't even all that disappointed that the Chris Noth content was limited. One other bonus was the surprise appearance of Titus Welliver as a possible adversary for both JM and her husband.
I'll definitely be giving it a shot for the new season.
~~~~Accidentally On Purpose
Jenna Elfman's new comedy. I use the word comedy loosely here since there was very little funny about this show. It's just...dumb. With shows like HIMYM and TBBT, I expect more of CBS when it comes to comedies. This looks like one of the bad ones that would crop up on Fox years ago.
Basically Jenna Elfman is a 37 year old woman (claims she's 32 multiple times) who wants her boss/lover (Grant Show) to propose to her. Ashley Jensen (who I loved in Ugly Betty and Extras) plays her best friend/obligitory lush.
Anyway, after a trip to Paris fails to produce an engagement ring, JE's character goes out drinking with her friend and her sister. She ends up having a one night stand with a *much* younger guy. One night turns into a couple of weeks which turns into an EPT.
The rest of the episode is her telling the much younger guy she going to have a baby, then having him move in because he's living in his van. (He's a young chef with no money and loser friends who spend a lot of time on the X-Box and turning her grandmother's urn into a water bowl.)
Skip it. I doubt this will even make it through the first round of cuts for the fall shows. I'm frankly amazed it even go the green light in the first place.
