My external hard drive just stopped working.  My laptop won't recognize it anymore. My entire iTunes library and tons of media stuff is on there.

Yeah.  I'll be over there in that corner.

You run XP? It has a history of bad registry keys causing this problem. You could search on your particular items and see what comes up.

You may only need a new enclosure - take the drive to a Best Buy maybe - just swap out the internal hard drive to a new case. Might just be something electrical that is not letting the drive spin up and mount.

tried renaming the drive?

If you search in the windows help on drive rename it should give you an option where you get to all the diskdrives (where you can make different partitions), it might be stuck on driveletter that won't show up. Had it with an USB stick on my work laptop once. and my dad had it with his external HD also.
Took me a while to get it uninstalled but after it installed again it worked fine.
