So I was reading this article about CSI:NY (itsy bitsy spoiler for Wednesday's ep in the article) and a comment by Gary Sinise set me to pondering.

"I think he's very private. That doesn't necessarily have to be a flaw, but some people can interpret it that way," says Sinise, who tends to be that way himself. "He brings leadership ability to the job . . . He's got a lot of integrity. He's the kind of guy you want in charge. He's just very businesslike."

I think that this is a pretty accurate take on how Mac is portrayed on the screen.  (I know that sounds weird since one would think that the actor would be in touch with the character's portrayal...but that's not always the case.)  My pondering comes in with how much of Mac's privacy issues are viewed as flaws by fandom in general.  I'm talking about how he ends up charactarized in many fics and such.  Also, how does this (or how should it) play into Mac's relationship with Peyton?

I think the privacy and businesslike thing gets translated into him being an unfeeling dick a lot of the time.  I don't agree with that, but I can almost see where some people come away with that perspective.  Especially when it's put up against the other characters personalities and interactions.

I see the relationship with Peyton as a strong challenge to his personality as a whole.  For someone that intensely private and businesslike, dating someone he works with has GOT to be scrambling his brain.  We've seen glimpses of this on the show, but I'd like to see that played out to a fuller realization.  If the writers are going to start? I'd like to see them go all the way.

Any thoughts?
