So after the general wankage that's happened recently, I figured that many of my flist (and even non-flist) could use a big hug right now. ::hugs flist and others::

I just don't understand the hatred and anger that seems to be so prevolent amongst the online fandom. Why do so many people care if someone else writes slash/het/gen...whatever?? Don't like it? Don't read it. No one has tied you to the chair in front of your computer. (Unless you're Daniel in a Whump!fic) Move on to other things that make you feel happier and that you enjoy. Can't find an archive that has your preferred type of fic? Instead of bitching about the ones that are out there, create your own.

My list of things I like about fandom and my flist...

I like that I have a somewhat varried flist when it comes to tastes in fic.
I like that I've found folks on my flist who almost completely share my taste in fic and fandoms (Hi [livejournal.com profile] gigitrek).
I like that fandom gives me the opportunity to have conversations with people with whom I'd never get the chance to socialize otherwise.
I like that I can openly drool over hot men (naked or clothed) and most of my flist gets it. I like that some of my flist may not get it.
I like that there are brilliant people on my flist who can articulate things in a way that makes me think.
I like that there are people on my flist who can make me giggle insanely and spit out my soda.

Whoo! Yay for separated fandom twins.

There's a lot of kinds of fic I don't get, but, speaking as someone who takes great joy from pairing men on various television shows, I'm in no position to cast stones. To each their own. Even if it's not Gibbs/DiNozzo or Reed/Hayes.

Hee...I have to remember never to use that visual if I want anyone paying attention for the rest of the paragraph.

After being involved in fandom for several years, I really came to the realisation that lot of people actually can't be happy if they didn't bitch about something... and they can't be happy if they don't force themselves to read something they hate so they can diss it afterward.

This is why I ignore fandom as a whole and why I enjoy reading my flist because even though we may not all share the same interests all the time, no one would even think of being disrespectul and downright stupid over it.

I think most of the people who complain about the types of fic they don't like haven't actually read them. Whenever you hear about challenges to books, most of the time the person who brings it up hasn't read it, they just hate it on general principle because of things they've heard about it.

It's much the same with fic. I read genre romance quite a lot, but I run screaming from most het fic. Go figure. But I often refer to this quote from "The Bad Beginning" by Lemony Snicket (yes, a kid's book, wanna make something of it? [g]) about different reading tastes:

"There are many, many types of books in the world, which makes good sense, because there are many, many types of people, and everybody wants to read something different. For instance, people who hate stories in which terrible things happen to small children should put this book down immediately."
