Shamelessly stealing this from a comm

It's time for a geek-off. Star Trek or Star Wars and why.
You can only pick one, and I expect real reasoning behind it, not just that you want to bone Natalie Portman or Patrick Stewart (though those could be good reasons now that I think about it). And don't say "neither," because no one likes a party pooper.

World-building was more complete (and not rampant with Kirk losing his shirt). Of course, there's the difference between film and tv which was a helluva gap 20 years ago. There are only two big 'cons' to SW---Lucas' inability to write a decent script and Jar-Jar. *G*

on 2008-05-06 11:18 pm (UTC)Star Wars started strong (cheesy, but memorable and mind-blowing) with the first movie, arguably peaked with the second, then began the slow decline into madness, starting with the Ewoks and continuing into the bowels of the prequels.
Star Trek started less strong than SW (though it was also quite cheesy, memorable and mind-blowing), achieved levels of consistent greatness throughout the second and third series, and remained compelling, if less so, during the fourth and fifth. Voyager and Enterprise did not live up to TNG and DS9, in my opinion, but the dropoff was not nearly so severe as the Star Wars prequels. The movies are kind of a wash, with three or four brilliant films along with some mediocres and a couple of downright howlers.
Star Wars has perhaps the more memorable archetype characters, at least in the original trilogy. But Star Trek gets points for consistency, and for paying better attention to its own continuity.

on 2008-05-08 05:43 am (UTC)And why? Spock. I fell in love with him and his hangups at the tender age of 7 and never outgrew it.
My first book purchase was Star Trek 8. My first fannish experience was the local ST club. My first slash was a K/S zine.
I'm doomed... *veg*
