Do you ever get the feeling that there are some folks whose sole purpose in life is to be contrary?

There's a person in one of the fandoms I lurk in who everytime I see a post by her, I cringe.  It's like the only way she feels good is by having a dissenting opinion and by sounding condescending when she's stating it.

I get that not everyone is going to agree on everything, even when the squee is strong.  I'm all in favor of folks having different likes and dislikes and feeling free to voice them even when they're not in the majority.  It's just with this person, she seems to do it on purpose.  It may just be her tone and the way things sound, but it feels like her main purpose on disliking or disagreeing with the group overall is to prove that she's 'smarter' or 'cooler' than the group.

For me the majority of exchanges involving her come off as:

Fan A: SQUEEE
Fan B: Double-SQUEE
Fan C: Squee (but to a slightly lesser degree)
Her: I don't see the Squee and a lot of people agree with me because what you're squeeing over is unworthy of the squee.  I don't see how any intelligent person could squee over it.

She's kind of making me want to do a virtual bitch-slap at this point.

Maybe I should just go take some more cough syrup.

Gah, every fandom just has to have at least one of those. It's not unlike the ones who avidly hate all aspects of something, but insist on sticking around in the fandom to make sure everyone knows how much they hate it.

People are weird.

Gosh, looking at the calendar, I really need to start watching all those Torchwoods I've DVRd before the new ones arrive.

You really should watch the S1 Torchwood, but know that much of it is complete and utter crack.

Nah. I'd go with the bitch slapping :o) And maybe more cough syrup too. Sometimes it's good to whine, but not all the time. If you don't like a fandom, don't stay in it FCOL.

It's not fucking rocket science.

OTOH some peeps don't feel happy unless they're complaining. Several of my relatives have been like that.

I say screw the lot of 'em ;o)

I get the feeling it's a whole lot of attention whoring on this person's part. Basically if she's not the center of attention, she's going to find a way to focus it back on her.

Hmmmm, cough syrup or bitch-slap? Tough question.

Okay. I've thought about it. I say go for the bitch-slap. ;-)

You going to be at Escapade this year?

Sadly, no. I have too many other plans scattered throughout the year that there's no way to fit that in as well. Plus it's happening right when one of my projects should be ramping up.

I may see if I can sneak up for a day to visit folks though.

Gotta tell you. I dropped one gal from my flist because I couldn't stand what she was saying about my fandom. She was always dissing the communities and people who had opinions differing from hers. And this was a smart woman.
It made me sad to drop her too. But, I'd rather have the happiness of squee than the blah, blah, blah of what is going on in the literary world. So buh bye.

You know, one thing to discuss different opinions but that phrasing always makes me annoyed: I don't see how anyone could like A or B or whatever.

I wish some people could realise that the world contains of more than their OWN opinions and brains!?

Complete yayness for your icon. It rocks in ways that haven't been invented yet. May I pinch it?
