Just finished the AIDS Walk with 30,000 of my closest friends. Well not just. I actually finished two hours ago but had to collapse on a patch of grass and then recharge with some Starbucks before heading home.
I'm not quite as sore as I expected. Especially given that I walked to the event too. That added about 2 miles to the total. I'm sure I'll be feeling it all sorts of places later though. Now? I'm just a bit dehydrated. I did drink water and stuff while walking, but I don't think I'm physically capable of drinking liquids fast enough to offset the loss for that sort of stuff. Yeah. I'm a freak.
I guess I'd say it was 'fun'. Met all sorts of people. Got to watch the West Hollywood cheerleaders perform. (They're a hoot if you've never seen them.) Saw celebs up on the stage at the opening ceremonies. Including? Pauley Perrette. She was quite cute and Abby looking. It was quite clear though that actors in general are NOT morning folk. Wayne Brady talked about how he overslept and got a text message from Jai Hernandez that if he didn't show up in time he was going to get a beat-down. The rest of the celebs were sporting various stages of bed head.
One of the funniest things was watching Wayne Brady get the sign language interpreters go through a bunch of euphemisms for taking a pee. It was pretty hilarious.
Also amusing? Carson Kressley does a dead on impersonation of Tim Gunn. If I hadn't been watching him at the time I would have thought that Tim was actually there. Sadly though, not. Of course if he were there Carson would have been busy hitting on him along with everything else that moved. Wow he's a man!slut. Jai looked a bit embarrassed.
The sad parts. Walking past the quilts that friends and family members had put on display on Melrose. It's always hard for me to see those tangible memorials. Even sadder, and I really almost started crying, was listening to the grandmother explain to her 11 or 12 year old granddaughter about the early days of AIDS and what it was like for people. It reminded me of how many of the people that were doing the walk have never lived in a world without the AIDS epidemic.
I did feel temporarily encouraged by remembering that people know so much more now than they did 20 years ago and how a lot of the hatred and fear has been overcome. Then I was hit smack in the face with it when we turned off La Brea onto Beverly to see two people holding signs about AIDS being God's judgement and that it was a good thing. I don't get how people can be that hateful. Later on Beverly towards the end of the walk there were other 'protesters' holding signs and shouting. So a bunch of the volunteers got bullhorns and shouted words of encouragement even louder to drown them out. The best part though? Two teenage boys (probably about 15 or 16) stopped in front of the protesters and started making out and then skipped off arm in arm. I so wanted to hug them.
Anyway, I'm off to drink more water and maybe nap for a bit. Or play Sims2.

on 2006-10-16 12:45 pm (UTC)Good on those kids too *bg* those who think AIDS is God's judgement are barking up the wrong deity.
Cool that you saw PP. I sometimes think there's a *very* fine line between PP and Abby. It must have been a gift of a part to get. Got my S1&2 DVDs this morning and I've watched SWAK already. *lufs* Gibbs and DiNozzo in the shower. Hairy back. Caring Cait. Just *lufs*.

on 2006-10-16 03:08 pm (UTC)I really just wanted to hug the two boys that were making out. I was impressed with how many young kids were walking. I know that there were some who were there for a school project, but it's still encouraging that folks that young see this as a civic duty.
