I've known for awhile now that Ann Coulter is a completely reprehensible human being (and I use "human being" in the loosest sense), but the breadth and depth of her intollerance (and the fact that she doesn't see anything wrong in voicing it) still continues to amaze me.
This interview shows that her brand of prejudice goes beyond just ignorance or even willful ignorance. She knows damn well that she's saying that other people are 'less' than her because of their belief system or their race, and she doesn't see anything wrong with that.
I just...if she doesn't see her remarks as being anti-semetic, then what on earth would qualify for her? It's not like there's anything subtle with what she's saying. Does this mean that anything short of cross-burning on someone's lawn is okay with her?
How can someone with an education possibly believe that? Though, the fact that she uses a Seinfeld episode as an example of race relations in New York does speak to her intellect a bit.

on 2007-10-12 05:58 pm (UTC)The whole thing reminded me of that episode of L & O: CI where Coulter's doppelganger was attacked. It amazes me that something similar doesn't happen on a regular basis to this mealy mouthed bitch.
{{{Hugs}}} for pointing this out, since LJ still won't let me post and for voicing your outrage in public.

on 2007-10-12 07:41 pm (UTC)There's a whole level of arrogance and closed-mindedness to her and people like her that just astounds me. I guess it just amazes me that people with that type of attitude can also delude themselves into thinking that they're anything but prejudicial.

on 2007-10-12 06:58 pm (UTC)Will THIS finally be the thing that drives her out of the public consciousness for good and all, except as the punchline of jokes, a la Jimmy the Greek?
Wow. How scary is this?

on 2007-10-12 07:46 pm (UTC)The scary part is that because she presents this 'smart, intelligent' package that there are folks who somehow find her vitrol more acceptable. UGH.

on 2007-10-12 07:04 pm (UTC)I wonder if she's part of that bizarre subset of Christians (usually fundies) who think that because Jews don't believe that Christ was the messiah, they need to hurry up and get on board, and I'm sure that some of them genuinely don't think they're being anti-semitic. It seems to usually co-exist with the kind of Christian who has feelings most regular folks would consider ?????? OUT THERE about gay people (but who would also not consider themselves homophobic, because they want to help them not be gay!) and on occasion you'll even find interesting race feelings (for instance about the non-okayness of mixed marriage, but combined with things about how God created different races on purpose and didn't intend them to mix, but that they're all equally-loved-- so they would probably also not consider themselves racists).
I don't know where these people come from! It seems like it often coincides with people who are giant megachurches, but not always. It's kind of interesting, in an appalling way.
Strange, indeed.

on 2007-10-12 07:57 pm (UTC)I remember when I was about 11 or 12 and the head of our church youth group was explaining how interracial marriages were wrong because it hurt the kids in the long run. He used one of the girls in our group as an example. She was pretty fair skinned and his reasoning was that if she married a white guy and never told him about her father being black and she had a baby with "black" features that she'd be accused of adultry. I couldn't understand why someone would get married and not ever introduce their parents to the person.
Then again, this guy also believed that rock and roll was from the devil because the drum beat makes folks want to fornicate. Trufax according to him. Apparently Gloria Estefan was right about the rhythm getting you.
The real kicker is when these folks are called on being racist or homophobic, the usual argument is that they hate the sin but love the sinner which shows that they're really loving and caring individuals. WTF? How is that not just as insulting and narrow-minded?
