So I ended up leaving an LJ community today (I'm not going into which one or the specifics, because I don't think the place is bad overall).

The issue was that there's a piece of entertainment that many of us are unable to view due to our locale. There are generally folks who are kind enough to share this entertainment through an initial *aheming* and then other folks take that *ahem* and share with the masses. In this particular instance a person who was doing the initial *aheming* asked that it not be shared beyond where they were posting it. This meant that it wouldn't be available to the larger population. I'm not sure of all of the particulars, but it sounds like they'd had some sort of bad experience.

Someone from the comm I left decided (after asking other folks to weigh in) to go against the original persons wishes and post the info anyway.

Here's the thing (now that I've been completely and confusingly vague), I don't believe that access to specific entertainment is an inalienable right. Sure it sucks, especially given that I'm one of the people who will probably never be able to have access to this entertainment. But that doesn't make it okay for me to disregard someone's express wishes not to share this entertainment other places. The irony is that the post on the comm is locked with instructions not to really share it outside the comm. ??? Hypocrisy much?

Most of the people are thanking the poster for going ahead and *aheming* and saying that since it's all on the edge of legality anyway what's the difference? I've seen this same argument in fanfic and the whole kurfuffle that happened with the remix thing. I still feel the same way as I did then. It doesn't have to be about the law. It's about everyday, common decency. If we in fandom can't treat each other with respect, I don't understand how we ever expect anyone else to. These are the kind of things that cause folks to pick up their toys and go home, which makes it that much sadder for those left behind.

And yes, I realize that much of this post is rambly and may not make a whole lot of sense, but I'll try and come back later when the brain is functioning a bit better and fix it.

So I'm watching my DVD of Goblet of Fire tonight. Is it wrong that I now find the little tongue thing that Barty Crouch, Jr. does kind of hot? I think that David Tennant must have some sort of special powers with that tongue. *cough*
