Torchwood CoE #4
Jul. 9th, 2009 07:18 pmI'm more than a bit conflicted. This was one of the best written episodes of Torchwood ever. In the end though, it's probably the episode that makes me say good-bye to the show.
I'd like to not sound like an emo-schoolgirl, but I really don't have the desire to watch the show without Ianto. It's pretty much the same thing as if Tony got killed off on NCIS (knocks on wood that doesn't happen).
As gorgeous as I think John Barrowman is he's just not enough to hold me. I also have issues with *how* dark they've made Jack at this point. Yes, I know. Tortured past, blah, blah, blah...but I have no interest in constantly rooting for a character that I only like intermittently. I have the same issue with Gwen carrying the show.
Okay, and yes I'm still bitter about Tosh and Owen.
So on the meta side of things, I wonder how this is going to impact the vibe of the crowd at the TW panel at Comic Con especially given that they're supposed to be doing an airing of eps at the con.
I'm suspecting that RTD's reception may be a bit on the cool side at this point.
This brings me to my next ponder...I think BBC blew it BIG TIME by not doing the simultaneous broadcast. There's no way this isn't going to hit the media in the UK, which means that folks here in the States will probably end up spoiled without wanting to be. I have to wonder if the waiting for Comic-Con is going to blow up in their faces.

on 2009-07-10 05:37 am (UTC)The episode WAS fantastically good, especially for TW, but yeah -- I'm not watching TW if it goes on without fixing this. I've watched all of S2 for the sake of Ianto and how they've let the character develop and quite frankly, if Ianto hadn't been there, I doubt I'd have watched S3 - I would at least not have had so much invested in it - emotionally.
*sniffles*
I now have the urge to write TW AUs

I SO agree re the simultaneous broadcast thing. I've WANTED to talk about it and been really aware of spoilers. It spoiled it for me not being able to tweet about it as openly as I wanted last night although I made a big spoilery post on my LJ which helped relieve some of my tension!
But if they DO revive Ianto somehow then actually it's great for the Janto relationship as it has forced Jack out in the open with his emotions. I do agree about how dark they've made him - in DW he wasn't a very dark character at all so I don't know why they've gone this route with him! Also, JB's acting isn't always that great if I'm honest. He manages flirty very well but is a bit rubbish at angst.

on 2009-07-10 06:48 pm (UTC)I just wonder how RTD thought folks would watch this and not have some sort of feeling of betrayal. It's hard because the writing has been brilliant for this series, but it doesn't make up for indiscriminately killing off the best character.
My Torchwood world pretty much ends at Dead Man Walking. The whole gang is still alive and well...including Myfwyny.

on 2009-07-10 06:53 pm (UTC)Initially they said they were going to do the simultaneous broadcast thing. They've been trying to cut down the time between airings to reduce piracy and boost BBCA's ratings. I have the feeling that BBCA asked them to wait for Comic Con and this is what we get.
I also saw that the panel for TW at Comic Con is sharing it's time with Being Human. I get wanting to plug a new show on the network, but I think that's disrespectful to the show that's garnered the highest ratings in the history of the network.
I just feel jerked around all the way with this.
I'm with you on JB too. I love the man's voice and I'm sure he's great on stage, but his melodrama? No. That's why I like flirty Jack. He can edge some angst in there, but Jack's his best when he's still all about the hedonism. This is why I love the idea of him and Tony flirting. They're so well matched with that.

on 2009-07-24 06:25 pm (UTC)And now if Ianto leaves, well, I just don't think that Jack and Gwen can do it alone, at least, not for me. It won't be Torchwood with just those two characters, no matter how they try. If they try.
I'll be curious to hear about comic con. *g*
I certainly think they made a mistake, because I've been hiding from spoilers and chomping at the bit. *g*
