More on the Knitting thing...

Since I finally made an actual decision on what I'm going to be knitting for the Ravellenic Games, I thought I'd share the project here.

This is the pattern: Lace Ribbon Scarf

And here's a picture of the yarn I'll be using. It's GORGEOUS.

It's a silk, wool blend and soooo soft and yummy to work with. I'll post more pics throughout the process. :)

For those who've been tuned in, I'll be doing an update on the whole gym thing later in the week. It is going well though. So...YAY.

In other news, I'm participating in the Ravellenic Games this year. For those not familiar, it's a knitting event that takes place during the Olympics. Competitors cast on during the opening ceremonies and should finish their chosen event/project by the closing ceremonies.

I have a crap-ton of yarn so I'm not worried about that. I'm just really trying to decide whether to stretch myself or go with something safe. I'm not the fastest knitter in the world so having the two week time-frame concerns me. I can knock out a simple-ish scarf in that time, but I'm not sure I'd be able to do something like the cowl I really want to do since it's a new pattern and figuring out the cast-on involves actually watching YouTube. If I do the scarf, I'm tempted to do either a HUGE one or do two. At the very least one scarf would qualify to compete for "Scarf Hockey" and "Synchronized Stash Busting". If I actually make it for someone else, it would also qualify for "Holiday Hurdles".

So apparently I've talked myself into doing at least one scarf...possibly two.

I know I've been spotty at best on checking in here lately. I've been spending a lot of my fannish time over on Tumblr (since that's where most of the Suits fandom is located) and I've been trying to get some actual RL stuff done as well. One of my goals this weekend is to organize some things a bit better and that includes my online life. What that means is I need to trim back in a few places including LJ/DW. I'll be doing a trim down of my reading lists, but that'll be 90% comms that I don't really read anymore. I'll probably also be dropping some folks who haven't posted in ages as well just to clean things up. As always, unless you're one of about a dozen specific people (who should know who they are by now) feel free to drop me at any time. I'm hoping by trimming down the list though that I'll have a manageable number of people I'm following and I can actually interact without feeling quite so overwhelmed.

I will be attempting to make more regular updates though. I will warn you that the initial ones will most likely be Suits HEAVY since the Season 2 premiere is tonight. SO EXCITED!!

I also wanted to say thank you for all the lovely birthday wishes last week and that I had an amazingly wonderful time in Ontario. slb44 was a hostess extraordinaire.

Update from Canada

So I was planning on just throwing up a few pics of my trip to Toronto, but have to mention the shooting since folks have been asking and my phone is blowing up right now with texts.

A couple hours ago there was a shooting at the food court of the Eaton Centre mall which is about 6 to 8 blocks down from my hotel. Thankfully when I'd finished up sightseeing, I decided at the last minute to head back to the hotel instead of going into the mall like I'd originally planned on. I'm now holed up in the hotel for the night. They're saying 8 victims, one fatality and they still haven't caught the gunman. YIKES!! So yay for instincts or lack of wanting to socialize or whatever. (Also, a thunderstorm just moved in. Really Canada??)

Anyway, on to the pics. I'll put a couple up here and then just give you guys a link to my Flickr album since I'll be updating it throughout the rest of the trip.

CN Tower which I went up to the top of. It was AWESOME. A chunk of the pics I've put up so far are the view from the tower. There's also a glass floor on one of the levels you can walk on. I love heights but it even made me swoon a bit.

My Suits peeps will get why this is fun. :) I want to be clear that there were no signs that said we couldn't go into this part of the parking lot. A guy with a grumpy face seemed to disagree.

This one is just me screwing around with the color levels when I was working with the RAW file for the photo.

One of the skyscrapers I took a pic of on Wednesday. The sky was perfect for getting shots of all the glass buildings.

(As a side note: I really need to figure out a better workflow for my pictures, especially now that I'm working with RAW files. I feel like I have a billion files everywhere and it makes it a pain to find them later and takes up a lot of room on the laptop. If anyone has any suggestions, PLEASE share.)

So I'm in Toronto. YAY! It's been an incredibly long day with an incredibly long week leading up to it. I'm heading off to bed soon (after watching a special on the Queen's Jubilee).

Can't wait to go off exploring tomorrow. Planning on doing one of the hop on hop off tour buses and getting my bearings. Not sure what I was expecting when I got to Toronto, but it's definitely a good stand in for mid-town Manhattan. VERY compact and dense from what I've seen so far.

I'm also going to hit up Eaton Centre tomorrow. There was no way that I was going to be this close to a giant shopping mall and not visit it. :) I really want to go to the Lush store though. I have a tub here at the hotel and plan on taking as many baths as possible while here. I'll share lots of pictures I'm sure. (Of the sights, not including the baths.)

The rest of the week is more sightseeing, museums and some Suits stalking with a couple of fans who live here. :) Next week I'll be hanging out with slb44 and having lots of fun. We'll be hanging out in her neck of the woods and going to Niagara Falls and plays and other such stuff.

Went to see The Avengers tonight with a group of fangirls. I'll do the recap tomorrow (well...later today), but I will say OMG AMAZEBALLS!! And I love that the points that I was all excited about are the ones everyone else seems excited about too!!

Anyway, I thought I'd share what happens when you mix an AWESOMTASTIC Avengers movie, fangirls, booze and dolls with articulation.

Toronto Trip

A couple of folks have asked me about dates and such for my trip to Toronto. Thought I'd share here.

I will be in Toronto from May 29th through June 9th (I extended it out from the original date of the 6th).

I would love to do a fan get together with anyone interested. Be it Suits or any other fannish stuff. :) At the moment my schedule is pretty flexible. I do have a couple of plans which will tie up specific days once I make a decision, but they’re still up in the air at the moment. But if folks have times/dates that work for them just let me know.

I’m also flexible on the location if anyone has ideas. I’ll be staying in Downton Toronto (near the University if the map doesn’t lie).

So, fannishness YAY!

Still sick. Looks like a respiratory infection at this point. Having soup and tea and psyching myself to go to Urgent Care to get some drugs, but it's dumping (and I mean dumping) down rain outside right now.

Maybe I'll just curl up under the covers again and put Gabriel Macht's voice on in the background to lull me to sleep.

Just an update on this post. I am actually working on a couple of the prompts. Unfortunately, the lingering cough from the flu is kicking my butt still to the point where I've had to med up. It doesn't really help with the whole coherent thing while writing. I hope to have something finished in the next day or so.

So the cough from my flu is ever lingering at this point. It's much better, and I'm functional but it is more than a bit annoying at this point.

In happier news though, I had a great time this weekend in Seattle. ECCC is such a low pressure con so you can really do as much or as little as you'd like. I got my main goal of getting a commission done by Marcus To. I ended up being second in his line. His flight in got delayed in Chicago so he was late getting to the con. A couple of us stood for quite awhile waiting for him to show, but it was definitely worth it. I'll be scanning the sketch along with some prints I bought from him and Dustin Nguyen (the artist) in the next day or so to share. :)

Also had a great time hanging out with crimsonquills and tartary_lamb . We also gorged ourselves on Irish food and drink (I introduced them to Car Bombs) and spent time watching Suits and direct-to-DVD action movies all for the sake of Gabriel Macht. NO REGRETS! We also went to the Wil Wheaton panel and he was awesome as always.

In Suits-related stuff, I just ordered tickets for June for the Paley Center screening of the Season 2 premiere! EEE! No word yet on any of the cast or production folks who would be there, but I'm excited either way. It's scheduled for the 11th, right after I get back from Toronto. YAY EXCITED!! As of right now I have two extra tickets if anyone is interested. I can also order more if more folks want to go.

So I'm on the tail end of 4 days of flu (the head, cough and achy kind). Have felt like complete and utter CRAP the whole time. Finally better today. Which is a very good thing because I had plans to go see "Hunger Games" with my boss and friends and I was the one who bought the tickets online.

I really liked the movie. The places where it suffered slightly were really due to having to cram that much story into just under 3 hours. I was impressed with how they handled a lot of the background narrative without having to do an exposition dump. Won't say anything beyond that...oh and my one friend with us who hadn't read the books said that she is now emotionally scarred for life. We were quite proud of ourselves.

For the rest of my weekend, I'm getting my hair done tomorrow and on Sunday I'm taking a mini-Photography class to learn how to play with my brand new camera. :D Oh, did I mention that on Monday (right before the plague from hell hit) I bought a new Canon EOS T3? The local camera store was having a "no sales tax" sale and there was a rebate on the camera with the kit lens and another rebate on a zoom lens. So, I now have new shiny!

Since I paid for my flight to Toronto in May at the same time, I'm now on a spending restriction. Though I did remember that I should be receiving my federal tax refund in a week or so, and that should cover the camera and most of the airfare as well (and wasn't already counted toward anything else). YAY.

Speaking of Toronto, the Suits cast are all heading back to start filming next week! They're already starting to toll each other on Twitter. Should be fun! Can't wait for the pictures to start showing up.

Another Countdown to Squee

Doing another countdown to squee. Not because things are bad, jut because there should always be squee. :) (Although I do have the hiccups at the moment and that could use some Squee.

1) Suits started re-airing Season 1 last night so for the first time I have Harvey and Mike on my TV screen and not just my computer. It also means that tonight they're showing "Errors and Omissions" which has adorable Stoned Puppy!Mike and "Good Boy". :)

2) In one week I will be at the movie theater watching "Hunger Games". My boss and I are ditching work early with a couple of friends to go see it. We're all fans of the book and SO excited!!!

3) In two weeks I'll be in Seattle for Emerald City Comic Con. I'm excited about hanging with friends and I'm excited because I finally get a chance to get a commission from Marcus To who is one of my favorite comic artists. I'm still having trouble deciding what to ask for. I'd kind of like one from him and one from Dustin Nguyen (another favorite) but I have they feeling they're both going to book up pretty fast. I'm kind of thinking a Steph!Batgirl from one and a Kara!Supergirl from the other.

4) The day after I get back, the 1940 US Census is released to the public. I know there's a look of puzzlement on many folks faces, but this is HUGE for a genealogy geek. It has the potential to help fill in several gaps in my family tree. (My understanding is that it takes approx. 72 years to release the census because, in theory, by that time any of the personally identifiable data will become obsolete.)

5) May 1 Suits Season 1 DVDs will be released. My joy for this knows no bounds.

6) May 4 AVENGERS!!! I was originally planning to go to Vancouver for the release, but with all the other travel plans coming up, I'm not sure that's going to happen. Hopefully I can find some L.A. fangirls to geek with!

7) Tentatively, May 29 through June 7th is Toronto!! I'm still not 100% sure on the dates or the length of stay, but that's looking the most likely. My birthday is tucked in there somewhere too. :)

8) June 14, SUITS SEASON 2!!!!!!!

9) August (can't remember exact dates) looks like I'll be doing a few days in Catalina with my mom. Haven't been to Catalina in years and am looking forward to it.

Upcoming happy things...

I've pre-ordered my Season 1 "Suits" DVD and it will arrive May 1st. YAY. Really can't wait for the commentary and Gag Reel on this. :D

Next week starshines will be hanging out for a couple of days and we'll be going to the Paley panel for Castle. Yay visits and Yay Nathan Fillion!

In a couple more weeks I'll be hanging out in Seattle! YAY!

Sometime in April and/or May I'll be doing multiple Disneyland trips. :)

It's looking like from May 29th through June 7th (dates are still approximate) I'll be in Toronto!!

There's also a chance of Hawaii happening sometime this year too!

Suits vs NCIS

I may be committing sacrilege here, but I think I may actually like Harvey Specter more than Gibbs. I know. Crazy, right?

Watching Suits has reminded me of many of the reasons why NCIS has lost its shine in many ways for me.

I had a whole long ramble about this, but my brain for writing coherently has seemingly abandoned me. I think the crux of it is, Suits has all these moments where we see Harvey acknowledge in fairly tangible ways that he really admires Mike and wants him there (even when he's being a bit of a douche). We also see moments where Mike stands up to Harvey and stands up for Harvey.

Unfortunately in NCIS, those moments became unicorn moments for so many seasons they were so few and far between. One of the things I could never understand is why the Tony in early Season 4 would ever stay at NCIS. His co-workers didn't respect him and he didn't seem to respect himself either. With Mike, I can see why he's so loyal to Harvey. Harvey has earned it in so many ways.

I don't know that I'm sad that I've moved on from NCIS, but it does help me figure out why Suits clicks so well for me.
